Rena disaster could not get any worse. At Tauranga’s Astrolabe reef on Wednesday the 5th of October 2011 at 2 20am.I have just herd that the driver was drunk and was celebrating his birthday with a few drinks and did not do his job so the boat crashed. The captain went to court. There was 1,785,000 litres of oil on board and 400,000 of that went into the ocean. The wild life was covered in oil- most died. The bad weather did not help the Residents take the oil off the beach. Rain went on and off. But most days it was sunny. Now the Rena is getting better and worse at the same time. The reef must be strong- quite strong. The Rena has 1386 containers on board.
Finally we got to Motat. First we had to hear some rules and what was happening today. Then once we had eaten our morning tea we went into the games room. I really liked the pipes. There were a variety of different lenght pipes that you had to hit with an old jandel. It wasn't very hygenic! The we had to go into a special room which had all sorts of old things in it. The first table was on cameras. Andrew and his mum had a race to see if they could find out how to use an old camera. This camera was not a camera like today - you had to hold it down by your tummy. There were two eye pieces - one for landscape and on for portrait. As you can guess this camera is called a box camera.
The second table had three typewriters on it. On the typewriter you can't backspace like on a computer. The lady that spoke to us said that she used to do her homework on a typewriter and if she made a mistake she had to take the paper out and restart! The third and fourth table both had old telphones on them. The first cell phone was really big and heavy. It had a strap that you had to wear around your neck to carry the phone. You could only get reception in the big towns or cities that had cell phone towers. Not many people had cell phones - unlike today!
One of the fun activites was going on the tram. It was a Melbourne tram and was green. On the way on the tram we passed the small red Wellington tram. The tram trip took about 5 minutes through Motat and passed the zoo. The Vogager is like a UFO. The four smallest people have to sit in the middle because of the projector. I was one of them. We were moving up and down like crazy. It was very noisy but lots of fun. After the ride had finished we shouted ágain and the teacher nodded allowing us to have another ride.
The kiwiana trail was fun. It showed us all the kiwi stuff. For example Marmite, tomato sauce bottles and pavlova. We found out that softdrinks used to come in glass bottles. On our way doing the Kiwiana trip we did the mirror maze. It was quite hard to know which way to turn because everything looked similar. It was easy to get lost and lose your friends. Finally we caught the bus home.
Communication
How did people communicate around the world in the past?
I talked with my mum and BJ ( grandma). They said that they used to communicate via letters, postcards, aerograms, telegrams and pidgeon post. My mum showed me some aerograms that she wrote when she lived in Saudi Arabia. My grandma has kept them all and she showed me a blank one which I have. In the war ships used to communicate via lights and flags ( which is called semifore).Phone calls were very expensive and people had 'party lines' and could listen in on other peoples conversations. How rude would that be!!!
How do we communicate with people around the world now?
Today we communicate via e mail, skype, heytel, fiber and its very quick. My grandma can now skype my aunty and cousins in England and it does not cost. A lot of people are on facebook and it is a very large social network - you have to be 13 years old to join.At work my mum now has video conferencing to people around the world. This means that you can have people from around the globe talking together in real time.
Scitech
In class we have found the ingredients of our prouducts. They are mint, vinger, flax goo and two more. We have found our final prouduct. The name of the product is ninja sheep . I think that was an quite good idear the name came from louis.
Scitech
In class we are testing what natural products have the most bacteria. We are doing the same thing with vinegar. In our testing we are using agar plates which are really good plates and they are really interesting plates. The plates have no bacteria at the start but three days later you start to see bacterium.
Scitech
In class we have been doing scitech. We have been trying to find out how much bacteria on Dom's hand right now. I think there is going to be a lot and there was quite a bit. Next we are checking how much bacteria in household products in some. I predict some will have alot and some will have not much. Our experiment will be the best in the whole world! We will get an award for best experiment in the world
Scitech
At school we have being learning about bacteria.Yesterday we did scitech. Our group is doing a brainstorm about what household prouducts kill bacteria? Here are some examples- Mr Muscles,Basics,Jif and Ajaxs

A moment in time
We were at the maritime museum waiting for the cannon to go off. It was going to shoot out paper bullets. We had to count down from 10, but after the 10 seconds, no body said anything. So the man did it again and it shot so fast over the water- it looked like a skimming rock. Then the man took the cannon away. I was really sad when the man took it away.....
